Melasma

What Is Melasma?
Melasma is a common skin condition that causes brown or grey-brown patches, typically on the face. At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we offer expert dermatological care and tailored treatment options to reduce pigmentation and restore your skin’s natural tone.
Causes of Melasma
Melasma can be triggered by:
- Sun exposure
- Hormonal changes (e.g. pregnancy, contraception, HRT)
- Genetics
- Certain medications
- Skin inflammation or irritation
Symptoms
- Brown, grey-brown, or tan patches on the face
- Symmetrical distribution of pigmentation
- Possible spread to neck or forearms (less common)
Melasma is not harmful or painful, but it can affect self-confidence and quality of life.
Diagnosis
Our dermatology specialists can diagnose melasma during a skin examination. We may use:
- Skin History & Lifestyle Assessment to identify potential triggers
- Wood’s Lamp Examination to assess the depth of pigmentation
- Dermatoscopy for a detailed look at the affected areas
Treatment Options
Melasma is a chronic condition, but with the right care, pigmentation can be significantly improved. Treatments include:
- Topical Medications
Prescription creams containing hydroquinone, tretinoin, corticosteroids, or azelaic acid to lighten pigmentation. - Chemical Peels
Medical-grade peels that help exfoliate and reduce discolouration. - Laser & Light-Based Therapy
Targeted laser treatments such as fractional laser or IPL (intense pulsed light) can improve stubborn melasma when administered by experienced dermatologists. - Microneedling with Serums
A minimally invasive technique that improves skin texture and promotes even skin tone. - Sun Protection Guidance
Broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential to prevent recurrence. We provide skincare plans tailored to your skin type.
