Mr Doherty completed medical training in 1988, at the University of London. Surgical training followed, at the Royal Marsden and Charing Cross Hospitals, along with studying at the Institute of Urology, University College London.
Consultant Urologist posts were the next stage in Mr Doherty’s career and he is now one of the UK’s most renowned prostate cancer specialists.
He advocated multi-parametric MRI before prostate biopsy, which became recognised as best practice. Other diagnostic techniques he developed are of value, as is his expertise in nerve sparing techniques during surgery.
This reduces the risk of erectile dysfunction, or incontinence from prostate cancer surgery. Part of the reason more than 3,000 prostate operations he has carried out have proven to be so successful.
The value Mr Doherty sees in this is the degree to which he has helped patients, who he believes in treating as the individuals they are.
Research & Teaching
Mr Doherty is recognised for auditing and publishing his results and has been highly commended by the Health Service Journal for his work in this area.
He came up with the idea for and led the development of a live prostate cancer results centre, allowing patients to track their recovery and compare outcomes. This innovation has been shortlisted for a prestigious Health Service Journal award.
