Mr Gowrishankar graduated with honours in dentistry in 2000. A three year postgraduate degree in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery followed, including a thesis on dentofacial deformity, before he undertook medical training.
This took place at Barts and The Royal London, from where he graduated in 2010. Foundation training came next, at University College Hospital London, before surgical training at Imperial college & Royal Free Hospital,with further speciality training in Oxford.
A maxillofacial specialist is in the unusual position of needing to be qualified and experienced in dentistry, medicine and surgery. A position Mr Gowrishankar had achieved, when he was admitted to the GMC’s specialist register in 2019.
After valuable Fellowships in Belgium and Spain, Mr Gowrishankar took up a consultancy post in Oxford. Offering patients advice, clinical consultations and treatment covering all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Mr Gowrishankar’s special interests include dentoalveolar surgery, facial deformity, maxillofacial trauma and minimal access TMJ surgery. He works alongside neurosurgeons on cases of complex craniofacial trauma and supports orthodontists in orthognathic clinics.
Above all, Mr Gowrishankar supports his patients, through sharing knowledge and treating them as the unique individuals they are.
Research & Teaching
Mr Gowrishankar has always had a keen interest in medical education. He is currently an Honorary Lecturer at RCS England and organises a range of courses for specialist registrars, in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
He lectures at national and international conferences, has served as an Education and CPD rep for the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and is President of the Oxford University Medical Education Fellows.
The Oxford Handbook of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery holds a chapter by Mr Gowrishankar, with wider presentation material authored. He firmly believes that sharing knowledge is the best way to help all patients.
