What To Expect During a CT Scan
At The Royal Bucks Hospital we strive to make your CT scan experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your scan and understand what to expect during the procedure.
-
Preparing for Your CT Scan
If your scan requires a contrast dye, you may receive special instructions about fasting before the appointment.
Before your scan, you may need to remove any metal objects, such as jewelry, glasses, or belts, as these can interfere with the imaging.
-
During Your CT Scan
You will lie on a motorised table that moves through the CT scanner, a doughnut-shaped machine. The scanner will take multiple X-ray images from different angles while you remain still. The process is painless and usually takes only a few minutes, though certain scans may take longer. Our radiology team will monitor the scan from a separate room and communicate with you through an intercom if needed.
-
After Your CT Scan
Once the scan is complete, you can resume normal activities unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. If contrast dye was used, you may be advised to drink plenty of fluids to help flush it from your system. A radiologist will review your images and send a report to your consultant or GP, who will discuss the results with you and determine the next steps in your care.
If you have any questions or concerns about your CT scan, our team are here to assist you.
